MILESTONES IN WEB DESIGN

The Summary

Milestones in Recovery is a residential treatment facility for eating disorders, fully accredited by the Joint Commission and licensed by the State of Florida.

Our Website Design Approach

Identifying the target audience

We had to ask ourselves a few questions to understand the target audience.

How many people are affected by an eating disorder?

An estimated 30 million people in the US have an eating disorder.

What’s the most significant demographic with eating disorders?

The largest demographic with eating disorders is female adolescents, ages 12-17. Eating disorders are more common in this age group due to various psychological, social, and cultural factors.

1 in 4 college-aged women engages in disordered eating behaviors.

Design of the website

After realizing the above, we identified that people who are going to visit the website would be those seeking treatment for themselves or those seeking treatment for someone they love. So how do we design a website that’s easy to follow and designed with empathy?

Designing with empathy

Designing with empathy is becoming increasingly important in web design. At annigra design, it always is an essential aspect of our web design process.

Empathy is the ability to relate to and understand the emotions and experiences of others. As website designers catering to Portland, Oregon, we strive to create meaningful and engaging experiences for our portland bases users. By leveraging empathy in our web design, we create an experience that resonates with users on an emotional level. Milestones in Recovery, being a business out of Florida, we had the opportunity to think outside our typical footprint.

One of the most effective ways to use empathy in web design is through user research and understanding user needs. This includes conducting user interviews, surveys, and focus groups (if possible) to gain insights into how people interact with the website. We talked to the milestones staff extensively about who comes to their facility and gained as much information as possible. By understanding the users’ needs, we can tailor our web design to their experiences and create a more meaningful experience.

Another way we used empathy in this web design project is through storytelling. While we didn’t have to create stories becasue, there were so many inspiring testimonials from previous clients that are meaningful to users and resonate with their experiences, and they can make an emotional connection with the users.

Finally, using empathy in web design also involves creating an aesthetically pleasing design that resonates with users. We carefully selected colors, fonts, font sizes, and images that evoke an emotional response. For example, choosing colors that convey a sense of trustworthiness or selecting images that reflect the milestone’s service can create an engaging experience for the visitors.

Wireframing

Wireframing is an integral part of our web design and development process, allowing designers and developers to create a blueprint of the site structure before beginning the aesthetic design process. It is a fundamental step in creating any website and can save time and money in the long run.

With over 100 pages scattered through the old website creating a transparent wireframe helped us provide a blueprint. This helped us define the structure and layout of a website or application, allowing designers and developers to plan out the user experience and how people will interact with the site. Creating a wireframe before beginning the design process ensured that everyone involved in the project was on the same page and could efficiently move forward with the design.

When creating the wireframe, our designers focused on the user experience of the website or application. We considered how users would interact with the site and planned out the navigation, layout, and content in an organized way. This allowed us to plan the website’s overall structure and application before beginning the aesthetics.

Content Organization

As mentioned in the brief, content organization was an integral part of this website design project. We had to figure out how to organize over a hundred pages of content to offer an effective user experience and set the tone for the website. It was also important for us to create a content strategy and organize the site’s content in a way that is intuitive and easy to navigate.

The most effective way to organize content is to create sections for different topics. This helped to break up the content into manageable chunks and made it easier for users to find what they were looking for. Categories are well-defined and organized logically.

We organized the content in a hierarchy that follows the user’s journey. Navigation was designed to lead users in a natural progression through the site and help them find the content they are looking for. We created a hierarchy that allows visitors to move from general information to more specific information in an organized manner.

The Brief

While the previous website for Milestones in Recovery had a lot of valuable content, the biggest challenge for visitors and potential clients was to find the information they were looking for easily. Our task was to redesign an esthetically pleasing website that is up to date and easy to update in the future.
